Wal-Mart Data Breach Phishing Scam
Some credit union members may have received a letter alerting them to a data
breach at Wal-Mart and assuring them that the Customer Security Team at CUNA is gathering information
and reissuing compromised cards. The letter encourages members to activate an “Enhanced Card Security”
by calling the included (fraudulent) phone number.
This letter is of special concern because it contains reassuring statements warning
recipients to be alert to scams, and to not provide any personal or account information to anyone e-mailing
or calling who claim to be from Visa and MasterCard. The thieves have cleverly included a link to a legitimate
third party anti-phishing website containing information on how not to fall victim to phishing scams.
Please be aware. This letter did not come from CUNA (Credit Union National Association)
and no Wal-Mart data breach has occurred. CUNA is a credit union trade organization and does not maintain
any type of customer/member information. This letter is a phishing scam. CUNA and Wal-Mart have worked
together to resolve the problem, and the phone number provided in the letter is now offline.
We at Greater Nevada Credit Union always take the utmost care to keep your account and personal
information safe and secure. If you ever see any type of suspicious activity or correspondence claiming to be from
CUNA or from Greater Nevada Credit Union, please report it to us immediately.
If you received this letter, whether you responded to it or not, you should contact us at 775-882-2060 or 800-421-6674.
